Tuscany - the beautiful region

Of the 20 regions in Italy, Tuscany must be one of the most famous due to its incredible landscapes.  Tuscany is located in the central western of the country, north of Rome and south of Genoa.  The reason for getting such beautiful scenery through Tuscany is the abundance of mountainous terrain in the region – Apennine Mountains to the north and east, the Apuan Alps to the northwest and furthermore, there is the serene Tyrrhenian Sea to the west.

The major cities in Tuscany are Florence, Siena, Arezzo and Pisa.   It also has one major river, the Arno, which runs from the Apennines and heads to the coast through both Florence and Pisa.

It is highly recommended that you get a hire car for your travels around Tuscany, as some towns and villages can only be reached by car or bus.  Tuscany can be crossed in only a few hours as it is a medium sized region.   Apart from a few major roads that cross Tuscany, most of the roads are state or provincial with a single lane in each direction.

However, the beautiful scenery and rich history of Tuscany and its wonderful cities will be more than enough to keep you occupied as you weave your way to your next exciting destination.
